7. Floating Cheesecloth Specters
Capture the essence of a classic, sorrowful ghost with floating cheesecloth specters. Unlike plastic or inflatable decorations, cheesecloth has a shredded, airy texture that catches the slightest breeze, making these ghosts appear to float and drift through the air with lifelike movement. They can be hung from tree branches in the front yard, suspended in dark corners of your living room, or placed on tabletops as freestanding, hollow figures.
To create a freestanding ghost, you will need cheesecloth, fabric stiffener (or white school glue mixed with water), and a mold such as a balloon resting on a plastic bottle. Drape the cheesecloth over your mold, shaping it to create draping arms and a flowing gown. Saturate the fabric thoroughly with the fabric stiffener and let it dry completely overnight. Once dry, carefully pop the balloon and remove the support structure. You will be left with a rigid, translucent, self-supporting ghostly figure. Add tiny black felt eyes or insert a blue LED light underneath to give it a chilling, supernatural radiance.
